EnviroTom

Envirotyping tomatoes to better understand and predict variety responses to a fluctuating environment

Tomatoes are particularly affected by climate change, especially in the Mediterranean region, where heat waves and issues related to water availability and quality are common. Analyzing genotype-environment (G×E) interactions enables breeders to develop new varieties adapted to specific environmental conditions. However, G×E interactions result from complex biological mechanisms and their responses to the environment, which hinders our understanding of the relationships between genotypes and phenotypes. The EnviroTom project aims at developping envirotyping for greenhouse-grown tomatoes to identify phenotypic and environmental traits as well as optimal haplotypes for tomato production in fluctuating environments. The project is establishing a multi-site trial network around the Mediterranean and uses precise environmental measurements to define relevant climate indicators. EnviroTom is based on a collaboration between public laboratories (research and experimental units) and private companies (seed companies).
