How does Cell‐to‐Cell Communication regulate Fruit Growth?

The 3C-FruitGrowth project (coordinated by C Chevalier, UMR BFP, Bordeaux) aims at investigating the involvement of cell-to-cell communication in the coordination of cell division during organ growth. To this end, we will focus on FW2.2, a well-established negative regulator of cell divisions and fruit size in tomato, whose mode of action remains elusive. Combining functional genomics and cell biology approaches, we recently established that FW2.2 and several of its homologs called CELL NUMBER REGULATOR (CNR) associate with plasmodesmata (PD) intercellular pores. Here we propose that FW2.2 and CNRs function is to regulate cell-to-cell trafficking, possibly of cell cycle regulators, via PD, to ultimately influence the final size of the fruit organ. In GAFL we will analyse the diversity of CNR and its homolog and how it is regulated at the transcriptome level in a diversity panel
