DG-PHYTOM (2017 - 2020)

DG-PHYTOM: Spectrum of action and genetic determinism of resistance to Phytophthora infestans in 12 wild tomatoes to build sustainable resistance to late blight

Phytophthora infestans, the late blight agent, is a major pathogen of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). The three resistance genes originating S. pimpinellifolium, introgressed into tomato varieties have been overcame by adapted isolates of P. infestans. Twelve new sources of resistance, from two related tomato species, were identified in the collection of genetic resources of INRA. The DG-PHYTOM project has three objectives: 1) assessing the increasing resistance spectrum obtained by combining locus from different species of tomato, 2) mapping the genetic factors involved in resistance among 12 accessions identified at INRA, and 3) deriving molecular markers linked to the identified resistance loci. At the end of this project, we will have a set of loci, involved in resistance to P. infestans and originating from different species of wild tomatoes. We will also have molecular markers closely linked to the identified loci. We will know the tomato accessions from which the association of resistance loci has the best chance to confer durable resistance to P. infestans.
