The largest family of genes for resistance to pathogens and pests is formed by nucleotide-binding site leucine-rich repeat (NLR) genes. Nevertheless, the specific role of each NLR remains largely unknown. Indeed, the sequencing / assembly / annotation of genomes have not been satisfying with short read technologies because of the structure and organization of these genes. The scientific challenge is to fully describe the NLRome of a species, the melon, to understand its role in the expression of immunity to numerous pests and pathogens and to explore the possibilities of recombination in complex NLR genes cluster.
