Evolution of pathogens on partially resistant genotypes of pepper: impacts on the within-host multiplication, the pathogen virulence and the host tolerance

Plant resistance and tolerance are regarded as outbreak managing tools to develop a sustainable agriculture. However, in the context of climate change and global trade, resistant and tolerant hosts are under the threat of adapted pathogens. The main goal of my PhD is to characterise the adaptation of Phytophthora capsici and Potato virus Y to partially resistant genotypes of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.). Experimentally evolved populations of both pathogens will be compared to ancestral (initial) strains for their within-host multiplication and virulence in order to evaluate whether the evolved populations adapted to their host and whether the host tolerance is impacted or not.  Finally, mutations on experimentally evolved populations will be analysed to explain virulence and within-host multiplication changes.
